Fun Summer Exercises for the Whole Family

One of the greatest things about summer is that it opens up a wide variety of physical activities that aren’t as available throughout the rest of the year. Plus, the children are out of school as well which makes it a wonderful time to include them in your exercise regimen, allowing you to spend some quality time together while teaching them the value of keeping your body moving.

What exercises will be fun for all of you?

Ball Games

Because the weather is generally much nicer in the summertime, that makes it perfect timing for a ball game among family and friends. No player is too young or too old and the only thing that matters is that you are having a great time while getting in some physical activity.

Baseball is one option to consider if you have enough players to create a couple of teams, or football works too if you prefer something a little more hands on. You can go solo with a game of tennis or you can involve the younger kids in a fun game of kickball.

Frisbee

Even though you can technically play Frisbee any time of year, it always seem more pleasurable when the sun is shining and the air is warm. Throw it back and forth between you or see if you can teach your furry little friend to catch it in midair. Either way, you’re sure to get in some physical activity as you chase that flat round disc every time it surfs past its intended target.

Surfing

Speaking of surfing, grab a surfboard or wakeboard and see if you can catch some waves while working your lower body and core. There is something absolutely exhilarating about riding the water that makes you want to go back for more. Never tried it? Take some lessons as a family and you may just find a new summer exercise that you absolutely fall in love with.

Skiing

It’s time to put up the snow skis and bring down the water skis, which is super fun no matter what your age. All you need is a boat and a rope and you’ve got the necessities to surf across the water like a pro.

Paddle Boarding

One of the newest water activities to hit the exercise world is called paddle boarding. Essentially, you stand up on a board the size of a surfboard and use a paddle to move across a body of water like a pond or small lake. You’ll work your upper body as well as your lower body and core as you work to keep your balance. Make a game of it and see if you can beat your kids from one side of the pond to the other.

Swimming

Like water but prefer to be in it as opposed to on top of it? Throw a pool or beach party for you and the kids and issue a challenge to see who can swim the most laps. You can also engage in a game of Marco Polo and chase after the sounds of their voices as they splash about in the water.

Skateboarding

It seems as if most people “outgrow” skateboarding, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There is plenty of fun to be had by the whole family just tooling around the neighborhood or standing in the driveway practicing tricks. It may not get you a super vigorous workout, but it will keep you moving nonetheless.

Bicycle Riding

Summer is the perfect time to get on your bikes as a family and explore the great outdoors. Take a trip around the block or go to a path that you’ve never gone before and explore lands unknown. If your little ones are real small, you can pull them behind your bike. But if they’re old enough, they’ll love to pedal their little feet as they work to keep up with you.

Golf

Golf is definitely a summertime sport that many families enjoy as a part of their regular activity schedule. You could even join a league as a family and compete against other teams. Just have fun with it and enjoy the memories you’ll be creating.

There are tons of things you can do as a family when it comes to exercise and staying in shape. Don’t forget to eat healthy foods, watch your portions by using portion controlled SlimPlates, and drink plenty of water so that you have the energy to keep up with your kids.

Now get out there and have some fun. Enjoy your summer together!
